When I first started Facebook there wasn’t any applications at all, it was just a wall and an inbox for messages.  It was a simple social network connecting people in colleges across the country.  The only thing people did all day when Facebook started was “Facebook stalk.”  That is, look at other people’s pictures and read messages left by other people on the person’s wall you are currently stalking. I remember asking people what they were doing on the phone and that was their reply.  ”Oh I’m just chilling wasting time on facebook stalking like a creeper.”

     I remember a time when all  I had to do was add some one to my friends list and they would be my friend from a school/work/organization/other etc… Now if you add someone you need to recommend a friend for them.  I honestly do not have the time to go around recommending friends for losers who can’t get friends for themselves.  When I first started Facebook I had two friends; the people that got me started.  No one wanted to know me, not even on a social network.  Can you imagine what running into someone that was a Facebook friend in the elevator was like? Awkward and I never knew a colder shoulder than that of a friend on an online social network.

     People are getting nasty and nastier as people in middle school are now becoming involved on Facebook nowadays.  You can tell this is true when you’re on there and a friend request from some preteen/teenager posing provocatively as they stare into a camera in front of a mirror is sent to you.  I just went to a conference a month ago and parents think that in order to stop their crazy teenagers from doing nasty things on Facebook, parents need to be a part of the Facebook social network.  This is the thing, when you give a kid a car he/she is not going to drive it like an adult.  The same thing for social networking, when you allow people in high school to register on to a predominantly college website, you are allowing them to come into contact with a different world of people, of those people some are sexual predators.  

     Is this the reason why parents decided to get an account on Facebook?  Maybe, but I highly doubt it.  I do not believe that parents have decided to access an account in order to watch out for their kids, but rather for their own personal gain.  

     Old folks on Face book can be very annoying, especially if they’re all in your business tagging embarrassing pictures of you and writing little quips on your wall like they’re hip and trendy, but for me I think I’ll pass.  I find myself denying access to family members, trying to dodge friend request from mothers, cousins and aunts, simply because I don’t want them all in my business. 

     I don’t like the idea of having my family always over my shoulder.  I swear occasionally when I write and even more so when I’m upset, but I certainly do not want anyone telling me what I need to remove even if the material maybe offensive.  I use good judgement and I write/say what I want. I don’t care if it’s offensive, I just want to express myself within the guidelines of the First Amendment.  Besides if you’re offended about what I’m talking about, I’m probably talking about you…
